Recommendations

At our first annual National Summitt held October 7, 2009, hand-selected delegates representing a broad cross-section of stakeholders from patient groups, public health and industry came together to discuss key issues, and create a central platform from which thought leaders and advocates can work together to identify and press for policy changes that will improve the delivery of critical care throughout the United States. Following presentations and deliberations on topics including challenges facing end-of-life care, rationing in critical care, workforce adequacy, and clinical trials in the critical care setting, delegates identified major consensus recommendations for federal policy action:

  • Improve the national infrastructure for critical care preparedness
  • Create a “standard of crisis care” for best practices
  • Support needed critical care therapeutic research through a national critical care trials and comparative effectiveness network
  • Restructure reimbursement to facilitate end-of-life support planning
  • Establish incentives for qualified individuals to join the critical care workforce
